The Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service announced that the federal income tax filing due date is automatically extended from April 15, 2020, to July 15, 2020.
Taxpayers can also defer federal income tax payments due on April 15, 2020, to July 15, 2020, without penalties and interest, regardless of the amount owed. This deferment applies to all taxpayers, including individuals, trusts and estates, corporations and other non-corporate tax filers as well as those who pay self-employment tax.
Taxpayers do not need to file any additional forms or call the IRS to qualify for this automatic federal tax filing and payment relief. Individual taxpayers who need additional time to file beyond the July 15 deadline, can request a filing extension by filing Form 4868 through their tax professional, tax software or using the Free File link on IRS.gov. Businesses who need additional time must file Form 7004.
To help prevent to spreading of COVID-19 we are trying to lower the amount of foot traffic and people at our office at one time. We encourage people to take advantage of the additional 90 days to file and only get out in public when necessary. We also understand that people may be hurting economically right now and could use their refund as soon as possible to help ease these financial burdens. We will honor all the appointments we have previously made, but are asking everyone else to drop off the taxes to us and we will work on them as quickly as possible and then call you when they are ready. The office will be open our normal tax season hours for people to drop off their taxes or to come by and finish up their already completed returns. This will help us limit our exposure to each other and better follow the social distancing procedures that are being recommended by the CDC.
With the extra 90 days to file we would like to focus on the individuals that would potentially be getting a refund, so we can get their refunds to them as soon as possible. If you know you will have a tax liability please use this grace period and come visit us at a later time once the virus is under control, or simply drop off your tax work to us and let us know that you are in no hurry to get them processed. People are also welcome to mail or email their information to us as well.
